The Scouting Division encompasses traditional scouting, tracking, and reconnaissance work, along with more espionage-focused tasks like surveillance, intelligence-gathering, and cryptography. Their overarching goal is make sure that whatever the Inquisition wants to do next, they have the information they need to pursue it as efficiently, safely, and successfully as possible.

SUBJECT: Scouting the mountains above Kirkwall
PARTICIPANTS: Ellana Ashara, James Norrington, Natasha Romanoff
DATE FILED: June 15
STATUS: Ongoing
SUMMARY: Scouting the mountains to look for paths the Inquisition can use. Will update this if I need to once it's further along.

REPORT: Agents scouting up in the mountains for secret passes discovered one in the upper reaches that is very narrow and drops off one side along a cliff, tunnels through a cave off the main pass that is overrun by nugs, and a cavern midway through the mountain that opens into a saltwater lake with probable ties to the Waking Sea.

SUBJECT: Surveillance and clearing out unpleasantness from a mansion in Hightown
PARTICIPANTS: Fenris, Aleron, Bethany, Korrin, Inessa, Church, Saoirse, and Ellana
DATE FILED: Justinian 1
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Throughout the month of Bloomingtide, Fenris observed the activity of the occupants of the mansion formerly owned by the magister, Danarius (and, as was pretty common knowledge, lived in by Fenris himself for a time after they got rid of him). He gathered a great deal of information on those who were there, finding out that another magister and a bunch of slavers had taken up residence there. At the end of the month, Fenris gathered a team to go in and take back the mansion, clearing out the magister and his crew once and for all. A rift erupted in the midst of the battle, necessitating bringing in another group to help fight the demons, including a rifter to seal it.

REPORT:

The following was transcribed:

Yet again, the taint of magic has wrought horrors (yes, you should leave that in). A month of surveillance was conducted on a Hightown mansion located at [address]. It was further determined that the magister and ALL slavers deserved death (this is true for all their kind without exception), and that the situation ought to be handled swiftly. A team infiltrated the mansion, fighting and ridding the residence of every last abhorrent occupant. The magister, Calanthus (appropriately named for one who became an abomination in history), was slain after a long battle. Good riddance.

Unfortunately, there was a complication. A rift erupted mid-battle, and a second team was called in to handle that situation. A rifter managed to seal it, and all of the demons were likewise destroyed. There's always a certain satisfaction in killing demons, although I despise that it had to happen within these walls.

As I have a claim on the mansion, I'll be settling in immediately. Now that it's cleared once and for all of the dregs of Thedas, those in the area ought to notice a considerable improvement in addition. The Inquisition can only benefit from the team's actions.

SUBJECT: Scouting the Undercity of Kirkwall
PARTICIPANTS: Yngvi
DATE FILED: Justinian 30
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Spending time blending into the Undercity to learn about the major players in the criminal circles of Kirkwall.

REPORT:
A report delivered in the middle of the night, rife with spelling mistakes, crossings out etc.

Discovered the following list of names, think they might be worth bothering with but don't go sending people that don't know what they're doing in the Undercity, they'll go scuttling off or you'll end up with folk bleeding everywhere. Won't want me saying I told you so.

Carta and Coterie still top of the heap, as expected. Thing going on with the Coterie but you ain't paying me enough to go take knives for you or to get people talking like that but not many things make folk that shifty in the Coterie unless it might be not knowing where the wind blows.

Starting from the bottom, almost all of us have to so take your lumps: Sewer Rats just getting edged out by Dead Men, what can you say about any of that really? The Poison Tits are tits but bit higher up than those two but that's neither here nor there. Really thought that the Deepstalkers were in the Carta's pocket so something happened that's smarting someone somewhere but again, pay me more and I get you more but we know what'll happen so there we go.

The Lowtown Demons would be better if they were are actual demons? Got some protection racket going on, not like folk have that sort of coin as is but it's getting real dicey with that. Might fancy having a butcher's at it. I would. But what am I, just the skivvy.

We've got the Dragon's Teeth, aspiring to glory, leader doesn't half love the sound of their voice like a Vint but they're not. Then it's The Knuckles, and no, I have no idea how that stupid a name scrambled so high but a mean lot, lot of punching, should see the face on the thing that's in charge, just looks like a pound of meat with some piggy eyes shoved in it. The Red Whispers are a shady bunch like you'd expect, half-expected to see something from the Red Iron involved but no, didn't get a word out of them but they do have tongues. Not like the dwarves that cut them out.

Anyway that's your lot for now but I have family dinners so if there's more I'll follow up. Lowtown Demons aren't highest up but if we have to do something about anyone first, I'd start there, it'll unsettle people to go for the middle instead of the top or the bottom as usual.

SUBJECT: Missing Carta agents in Orzammar
PARTICIPANTS: Yngvi, Wren, Ciri, Kit, Seoraj
DATE FILED: early Firstfall
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Investigating Carta agents failing to report back from Orzammaar on schedule before dealing with a rogue red lyrium mining operation involving them and Casteless dwarves. Operation shut down, agents rescued, Casteless dwarves killed as a mercy.
REPORT:
This report's late, I know, sorry. Don't know how to write this one.

We - me, Ser Coupe, Warden Ciri, Seoraj, and Kit - all went to Orzammar together and got in the front door without problems. Some young Casteless guards elevated by Bhelen's reforms helped direct us to the Deep Roads; as well as it likely being where our Carta folk were, they told us about Casteless disappearances too. Not as common as they used to be these days, but no one else had been looking into it.

Heading into the Deep Roads we went looking for the missing. Red lyrium was growing the further in that we got. It wasn't what any of us expected to see down there. And what we saw after—

It was an operation to mine red lyrium, from what we learned after we fought the miners they'd been trying to make a profit by grabbing members of the Casteless to do it. Finding people who wouldn't be missed, taking them down there, working them to death – it was terrible. I haven't seen anything that bad before. Our missing Carta contacts were locked up instead of being made to work because they thought they'd be useful to them, because they thought that seeing the way the Casteless were being worked would break them.

We couldn't save the Casteless. It was…people say it's mercy to kill them but it wasn't. It was just the only thing to do. They were dying, and sick, and they asked. They were beyond being healed.

I think it's best to talk with Lady Cedoux and Kit for what to do about what we learned in Orzammar. Sorry for this taking so long to reach you, getting it down has been—

It's been hard. The contacts have been recovering and returned to the Carta, they're very grateful for the Inquisition's help in returning their people to them.

Yngvi

SUBJECT: Hunterhorn Mountains Red Lyrium Darkspawn
PARTICIPANTS: Colin & NPCs
DATE FILED: Drakonis 5
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Following a tip from Kal-sharok, discovered the remains of darkspawn with red lyrium growing on their bones, much like the remains of red templars.

REPORT:

Lady Scoutmaster,

Roughly a year ago, Kal-sharok showed interest in an alliance. A term they gave us before they would consider negotiation was that we scout two areas in the Hunterhorn Mountains and take care of the problems there. As it was an old request, when we arrived, we found the dwarves had already dealt with the problem. Or, problems.

When we searched the caves in the mountain, we found darkspawn camps. Not simply stops on the way to somewhere, but actual camps meant to be bases from which they launched attacks. There were no corpses, per se, as all the darkspawn had been burned before we arrived. There was a great deal of ash and bone, and attached to a number of the bones was red lyrium. I heard it described as something like the remains of red templars. So now we have red darkspawn, as if we didn't have enough trouble.

All matters of diplomacy with Kal-sharok have been submitted to Madame Ambassador Petroux, but I wanted you to know about these darkspawn immediately.

Yours respectfully,
Colin

DATE FILED: Last day of Cloudreach
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Adasse was sent to scout the Wounded Coast. He didn't find much, except for a very distressed lady with a cat up a tree. He got the cat and earned cat hair and scones for his trouble.

REPORT:

Hey Boss,

So as you asked, I rode up to the Wounded Coast to take a look-see around. I didn't really find much in the way of slavers or bandits. In fact it was weirdly quiet out there for criminal activities. I'm thinking we're scaring off a lot of the local element much further up the coast, where the Inquisition can't interfere with their business.

As it stands, the only thing I found was a middle-aged woman wringing her hands and practically bawling at me the moment she saw me. She didn't even make some sort of smart remark about my being an elf -- she just sobbed at me to help her save her Mister Wigglebottoms. Mr Wigglebottoms is a fine specimin of calico kitty, and since I like cats more than I like shems, I was pleased to help. I got a few claws for my trouble, but nothing a little ale can't fix.

The lady was grateful, and gifted me with a scone. I also got a bit of cat hair, but I prefer the scone honestly.

SUBJECT: Scouting the Planascene Forest, Part 1 of ?
PARTICIPANTS: Kostos Averesch
DATE FILED: Nowish
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Scoping out the woods provides a WEALTH of USEFUL INFORMATION that is probably CRITICAL TO THE WAR EFFORT. (No.)

REPORT:
Cloudreach 20-21, Planascene Forest. Observed:

— Seventy thousand Maker-damned fucking trees, only one of which appeared possessed.

— A creek, with leeches.

— Some birds.

— Two arrows embedded in one of the seventy thousand Maker-damned fucking trees. Brought them back.

— Five mages residing in a long-term camp northwest of Leech Creek. Observed at a distance for approximately two hours discussing what they would have for dinner and whose responsibility it was to cook that day. Approached after determining they were utterly fucking harmless. Told them I was traveling to Cumberland. Was warned about leeches in creek. Was warned about leeches generally. Warning was contradicted by second mage who was certain that leeches could remove impurities from the blood. Warning was reiterated by first mage who did not wish for anything, whether it had limbs or not, to take his blood to do who knows what with. Second mage clarified that "who knows what" was likely digestion. First stated that that did not make it better. Theorized leeches were digesting impurities and leaving blood shit everywhere that anyone else could then use. Theorized leeches were worms possessed by hunger demons. Third mage said that she would be possessed by a hunger demon soon if she was not fed. Fourth mage informed her that that was not funny. Third mage informed him that it was his turn to attempt to hunt and if she was required to have moss soup for a fifth night she would be sure to shit green moss into his bedroll afterwards. Second mage recommended roasting moss in chips, decided salt would be required, recommended tossing moss in salad, decided additional ingredients would be required, recommended boiling moss into more of a mash that a soup, decided that would be disgusting, recommended fourth mage get off his ass and attempt to find a rabbit. Fourth mage insisted third mage help. First mage described group's previous uses of moss as meals for an entire fucking eternity. Asked if I would like some. Insisted I have some over my objections because I was not carrying enough provisions to walk to Cumberland. Informed me of the ancient lost healing properties of moss while I ate, particularly as regards heartburn and chronic impotency. Fifth mage woke from nap to inform us that this was bullshit. First and fifth mages discussed veracity of moss claims while fourth and third mages searched, loudly, for wildlife. Recommended they visit Kirkwall for salt and was assured they were avoiding populated areas until the matter of the war was fully settled. Hunters returned rabbitless. Left before additional moss was offered.

— Bear or wolf tracks. Unsure of difference.

— An additional eighty thousand Maked-damned fucking trees.

There are better uses for me.

SUBJECT: To Catch A Darkspawn
PARTICIPANTS: Sarah Manning, Helena, D’Artagnan, Hanzo Shimada
DATE FILED: early Harvestmere
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Scouts went to the Hunterhorn Mountains to capture a red lyrium infected darkspawn. Things almost went very badly, but reinforcements ensured they successfully completed the mission.

REPORT:
Dear Scoutmaster Ashara,

We have caught your darkspawn.

I took only Sarah for better stealth and sneaking, because Hunterhorns are so dangerous, but first I spoke to Christine from Red Lyrium and she told us how to be properly careful. I did not take Grey Warden because I am not knowing them or trusting their working.

We caught darkspawn, but it almost ran away. Sarah was very brave and tackled darkspawn to make sure it did not escape, but ankle was broken in the doing of this. Darkspawn was injured and restrained.

Hanzo and D’Artagnan came for support. They helped with medicines for Sarah and safely getting back to Inquisition without losing the darkspawn for research.

I hope it is very very helpful and Cosima will find many good things.

Thank you. Have a good day.

Helena

SUMMARY: Scouting the Lakes of Wildervale in the hopes of finding anything significant revealed a mage chased into said lake that had then turned into an abomination. Yngvi ended up helping out the local guards who'd chased the mage when the abomination waded to the shore and attacked.

REPORT:
First off if we know anyone in the region of the Lakes of Wildervale you need to commend them on hiring idiots for guards because who manages to let the mage make off with the only boat? The mage? Where to mages even learn to row? All them boats wedged into walls at odd angles you hear people blathering on about that they've got in the Fade?

I'm a dwarf so you know I wasn't going to just go wading in because what am I going to do in that situation? Drown at it? Besides they had no options and it was a fun debate if abominations can swim I don't think anyone knew that until now. Turns out they can't but we didn't get to the do they need air thing or if they were going to get the biggest stick they could get because the bugger waded out.

Things I wouldn't recommend scoutmaster: wet, bedraggled, seaweed wielding abomination attacking you. The abomination was killed because between all of us we had that bit under control. They wanted to get back to their debate but I left to patrol just in case they'd left their brains lying about somewhere.

SUMMARY: A team went to Nevarra to secure leverage against Aurelia Pentaghast, but found a Venatori spy after the same information. Matters have escalated for Perendale’s siege and Aurelia’s potential succession of the throne.

REPORT:
Scoutmaster Ashara,

You already know some of the particulars.

Our initial arrival to speak with Aurelia progressed well, but matters became more complex when your scouts realised the presence of a Venatori spy. He was captured and interrogated. Vel Ruso advised us that that the Venatori were only honouring the deal Aurelia made with the Anderfels and leaving Perendale intact because they felt, as did we, that the information could be used to influence matters in Nevarra. He had been sent to collect proof, and deliver it to the Venatori so they might have their leverage. If he failed to secure said leverage, the Venatori would issue orders to the Anders to raze Perendale.

I decided that the cost of having the Pentaghasts and Nevarra potentially under the sway of the Venatori was too high a price to pay, and that even if the cost were Perendale, securing Thedas’ future was paramount. Vel even appealed to the Inquisition’s history of benevolence, although I suspect this an attempt to save his own life and honour his contract with the Venatori, above any care for Perendale.

Immediately the documents were secured, Captain James Flint departed to Kirkwall, with the instructions to deliver them to your hand alone and by any means necessary. It is my understanding that he succeeded in that assignment.

Scout Lavore is skilled in forgery, and resourceful. We attempted to buy some time for Perendale by using documents and seals to forge an update from Vel that suggested he was nearing his goal, and I spoke with Aurelia directly. She will have time for some action, and my prayers are that she may yet be able to aid Perendale, but I fear they have been condemned to a bloody fate.

You know already that Warden von Skraedder and Scout Agassi departed shortly after Flint, that they might do whatever they could to aid Perendale. As yet I have received no word from Warden von Skraedder and Scout Agassi, and have no notion if this is good news or bad. I issued orders that if there were any chance of them falling into the hands of the enemy, they destroy their communication crystals.

I am at your disposal should any point require clarification.

Ambassador Amsel

STATUS: Complete / threading ongoing
SUMMARY: A stealth team went to Churneau on a mission to save one of the Inquisition’s supporters, Revered Mother Riccarda, and gather intel on the Anders troops and their movements.

REPORT:
Scoutmaster Ashara,

The mission to Churneau was carried out successfully and without any Inquisition casualties.

The information you received about the threat to Revered Mother Riccarda was correct. She is safe and returned with us to Kirkwall, where she is being treated for a minor injury she suffered. Her condition is good, and her spirits are high. Thanks to your sources, we were able to save a vocal supporter of the Inquisition.

Concerning the intel we gathered:

The Anders are moving some forces away from Churneau, and trying to be discrete in what they are doing. Churned is still strongly manned and are not compromised by the reduced numbers, but reinforcements are definitely being moved to the east. We believe, based on the direction of travel, that they are being moved to the Fields of Ghislain. I have enclosed the numbers and times that we recorded, for further analysis.

Others in the team moved closer to the encampment, and were able to determine that weapons and supplies were being loaded into false bottoms of carts that otherwise appeared empty. Evidently they do not wish to alert anyone of the movement in either troops or supplies, or the strength of the force they are preparing.

I would like to praise both Yseult and Lakshmi for their conduct, and say the gathering of intel would not have been successful without their experience, their abilities, and their bravery. Without them I do not know if we could have found out nearly so much as we did.

If you wish for further information, please do not hesitate to speak with any one of us.

STATUS: complete?
SUMMARY: Legolas and Yngvi travel to the warfront, going behind enemy lines to a section of forest that has been reported to have a great deal of wildlife and medicinal herbs. They are tasked with removing both from the area via any means possible but run into a Snag.

REPORT:

[in exactly neat and perfunctory handwriting with a hint of a scrawl that comes from someone who just Doesn't Write A Lot. makes you wonder how many poor sheets of paper were wasted getting to this point.]

To Scoutmaster Beleth of Clan Ashara,

Master Yngvi and I have returned from our task, though I do not deign to call it grand success.

We have interfered with their goods; beasts and creatures of all usually edible manner have been driven out. I have sent what I could to the front of our own forces, assuming they remember what I have said about where to go. The druffalo with elfroot tied to his back is especially sweet in temperament (for a druffalo, I hear!) and would make a good draft creature, I think. I do not know much of the matter of farming. He will be good for eating, in any case.

Yngvi has pointed out many of the medicinal herbs I am unfamiliar with; we have brought back those as well, and sent to the front what his beast of burden could not carry. I hope that they will be of much use, I hear they are used to make tinctures and potions.

Unfortunately we were only able to cover half of the ground (it is a lot of ground! But, it did make for a very pleasant walk, or several walks, if one's walk generally includes chasing off indigenous wildlife and ravaging the land) before we were spotted, which I believe is very unobservant of them, but I suppose that is the way of the Mannish folk. We should maintain an increased watch of our own supplies, lest the same happen to us (and that would be very, very embarrassing, I think). Being that we were but two people and a magnificent steed, a confrontation would have been sorely unwise, and we were forced to let the matter be as it was.

I pray that this is sufficient for the purposes of the task, and I regret that we were not able to do more damage, short of burning it all down. I am not very fond of grand fires.

With Respects,
Legolas Greenleaf of Mirkwood

P.S. I have attached flowers. I think they smell lovely. I do not know what they are or if they are dangerous, but if you have not heard news of my illness by the time this report is received, I believe they should be harmless (perhaps! I do not know how the constitution is of elves of this land compared to my own).

They taste of redberries.

SUMMARY: Shimada Venatori approached Kirkwall with the intention of assassinating Hanzo Shimada. They were apprehended.

REPORT:
Scoutmaster.

Venatori assassins were on the outskirts of Kirkwall. They came while a scouting party was investigating the area around the city as part of scheduled routines. They came because they wished to carry out an assassination on Hanzo Shimada, myself, former Magister of the Shimada household.

It has been revealed to members of my projects that I held a position in Tevinter before my arrival. I was the leader of the Shimada family before their involvement in the Venatori and their alliances with Corypheus. I am the former Magister, but I left my post ten years before now. That is the reason why the Venatori decided to send assassins for me: with my return to Tevinter rumoured due to my visit to Minrathous they fear that I might return and take control of the family. There are many that would follow me still due to my blood connection and the lack of viable heir.

Myself, Benedict Artemaeus, Kostos Averesch and Helena were apprehended outside Kirkwall. Two Venatori agents were taken down. Some information was gathered about Tevinter, but nothing that we did not already know. I will pass on that information to the Scoutmaster personally.

If there are any further queries on the matter I am able to discuss them. I will accept any punishment for the delay in informing the Inquisition about my true heritage and my connection to Tevinter. Please consider this document an official report on both my position and the assassination attempt.

Scoutmaster,

There's a situation involving the Carta that's landed in my lap that I need to deal with urgently. It's an Orzammar thing too, a few difficulties that they've been trying to sort out but can't for the obvious reasons. Just letting you know that I'm not abandoning my post or skipping out, I'm doing something else I'm cleared to do.

Kithan Gandir (scouting) is coming with me and cleared it being head of the project I'm part of and since it seemed a diplomatic sort of thing, I cleared it with Madame de Cedoux at the same time. Ser Coupe (diplomacy) is coming too, Seoraj is an old friend so I'll be asking him (research) and since we might be too close to the Deep Roads for company, I'm asking for a Warden to join us and Warden Ciri is also part of scouting.

Hopefully it shouldn't take long and a happy Carta's good for all of us, believe me. Will report in full whenever we get back.

Scoutmaster Ashara,

My apologies for the brevity of this note. I wanted to ensure a copy of this report came to you as quickly as possible.

Enchanter Ceallach and Nahariel of Dahlasanor recently returned from a mission near the Western Approach for Chantry Relations, and their report made mention of red lyrium that had disturbed a local herd of gurn. Although these deposits were small, they feel that some additional scouting to the area would be beneficial to ensure there is no greater underlying issue.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist further. I am sure the individuals who attended the mission would be more than willing to grant you further insight. I will make sure that Christine Delacroix receives a copy of this report for the Red Lyrium project, as well.

Yours sincerely,

Herian Amsel
