CHANTRY RELATIONS

Though still reeling from political crises and the loss of Divine Justinia, the Chantry remains the most powerful institution in Thedas, and its relationship with the Inquisition has always been ambiguous at best. It is imperative that the Inquisition work to clarify and improve that relationship lest the Chantry turn its considerable influence against the organization. Working with the Chantry is also the Inquisition's best hope of shaping the ultimate outcome of the Mage/Templar conflict and the future of both the Circles and the Templar Order.

SUBJECT: Chantry matters in Montfort and Churneau
PARTICIPANTS: Jehan Mercier
DATE FILED: Late Kingsway 9:43
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Jehan talked to some Chantry people in Orlais while he was gone.

REPORT:
Dear Ser Coupe,

I am pleased to be back and would be equally pleased to discuss any of these matters with you directly if you desire, but for the sake of your records and your time I have put it first to page.

After visiting my family I spent most of my time in Montfort, where Grand Cleric Henriette has been particularly vocal in her belief that we are heretics harboring demons and threatening to impose our will on the Chantry. I do not doubt her sincerity, but when I spoke to her of the good we are doing she was quick to acquiesce, and in later conversations seemed confused. It was almost as if she thought we were speaking of two separate organizations, the heretical and the holy. Her Grace is reaching the end of her years, and with all possible kindness I must report I am not certain how sound of mind she is.

However, her inevitable successor is Mother Mathilde, in whom burns enough fire to make even her kindest words to me scalding. She seemed most unhappy that I was there at all, meddling, and likewise seems to be the source of many of the Grand Cleric's beliefs regarding our heresy. Her sincerity I do doubt. She has cultivated friendships and may have designs on the Sunburst Throne. I did not consider an earnest appeal to her to be worth the effort, and perhaps counterproductive at this time, so I left her with her opinions.

As better news, however, I can offer Mother Alizée. She is Mother Mathilde's junior, and while she was somewhat skeptical of me as well, she was willing to listen. She has assured me that I have not persuaded her to trust us; however, she likewise does not trust Mother Mathilde, and she promised, unprompted, to write to us if Mother Mathilde makes a move that may hamper our efforts rather than continuing to stir a pot that is already stirred. If we have need of further efforts in Montfort, I believe she would be flattered to be contacted first and brought into our confidences.

In Churneau, Revered Mother Adélie was most accommodating, though I do have the advantage of having known her since my childhood. She said to me that she could not believe I would place this much trust in an organization that was not worthy of it, but I cannot say for certain whether she meant it sincerely or as underhanded caution to me. I am inclined to believe the latter. In either case it made frankly discussing her opinions difficult. I did not wish to risk any advantage I may have should we need a favor from her in the future by pressing an issue she was determined to dance around.

Sister Élodie was more forthright; had she the art to be underhanded, she would presumably also have the art to not be such a transparent gossip. She corresponds with Sisters across Thedas. In addition to the usual rumors that we are harboring demons, she has received scandalous reports that a group of Andrastians outside Hunter Fell have taken up the belief that our rifters are the Maker's Third Children, a compromise between spirits and the living with none of our sins who will inherit the world in our place, and the Mothers there are most distressed at their failure to dissuade them.

Before returning I travelled to visit Sister Sandrine, with whom I studied as a boy, in her mission to the Nahashin Marshes. It was a personal visit, but I can report that the marshfolk have heard little of us and seem content with that. Sister Sandrine confided in me that many believe we worship the Herald as one should worship Andraste and may come to convert them. I am not certain what there is to gain by relieving them of this notion, but there is no harm in knowing that they possess it.

Cordially,

Brother Jehan

Brother Jehan,

Welcome back. Thank you for your thoroughness; I cannot commend it beyond that which it naturally presents.

While I regret to hear of the Grand Cleric's decline, I concur with your assessment: To attend to Mother Mathilde is to dignify her concerns. Mother Alizée seems a sound contact, and yours a solid approach. If her skepticism can be managed, it may speak better to us than unreserved support.

With regards to Churneau — Are there areas of ministry to which the Revered Mother gives particular focus? We should not risk your ties, incidentally or otherwise. I would sooner we be aware of how our actions in the region might disrupt theirs.

Gossips are a blessing of the Maker. Sister Élodie should be rewarded appropriately, perhaps a small group might be assembled to curate those rumours returned.

Hunter Fell requires redress, and we'll need to manage it without appearing to lend them credence. Though I hesitate to suggest anything that paints our Rifted guests in hostile light, perhaps a firsthand view of the most dim would convince —

[ The previous sentence is heavily, if not completely inked through. ]

Let us think on it.

The antipathy between Marshes and capitol being what it is, I am relieved to know you've ears on the ground (however damp). Though I cannot imagine they would attract Corypheus' attention, the Venatori drive further into the wilderness with each day. The occasional whisper of news would not harm us to own.

I defer to you fully in matters of theology, but admit reserve. The attention paid the Prophet has divided us before. The Inquisition requires the Herald's mandate, and the South has a taste for heroes, it is true. Still, this places a great deal of faith in the hands of those remaining Trevelyans. With respect paid to their mourning, I mislike them unwatched.

If there is an area you believe deserving of priority, I encourage you to begin. Sister Élodie and matters of background reconnaissance would not greatly tax our resources.

An aside: Enchanter Shivana has organized a Chant discussion group. It is my hope they might aid us in anticipating the variety of perspectives these times encourage. I am certain they would be pleased for your presence.

If you require aught to proceed, please inform me.

SUBJECT: The Annulment at Dairsmuid

DATE FILED: Solace 9:42
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Araceli heard of the previous Annulment at Dairsmuid and survivors in need of aid living at a camp and asked the Inquisition to come help get them to the docks. Unfortunately the Templars raided the camp, took the survivors back to Dairsmuid, and the party had to race to the Circle to kill the Templars and free the mages.

REPORT:
  • Araceli was able to gain the trust of the mage contacts by speaking well of the Inquisition and Mage Council during her initial study trip to be given First Enchanter Rivella's journal so she could signal the group
  • The meeting with the mage contacts at the camp went well and they were all able to get enough details for the rescue attempt
  • Minor injuries to the party, mainly those involved in Team Templar Crushers
  • Rogue Templars were killed, their bodies burned since they were Chantry folk and there were Chantry people on the mission. The Rivaini mages had been locked in the dungeons and forced to drink a great deal of magebane; some were weaker than others and required healing but all survived
  • The Rivaini mages returned to seek refuge with the Inquisition - they plan to return to Rivain one day when the future is more stable, their loved ones are indebted thanks to the swift action and kindness they have been shown
  • Several artifacts and many books that could be salvaged from the wreckage of Dairsmuid were brought with the mages to Skyhold
  • Prior to leaving Rivain, a group lead by Ellana including Kirk, Korrin, Araceli and Anders made contact with the Rivaini Dalish; a personal visit but contact has been made and they discussed why they were in Rivain in the first place
  • The Rivaini mages are a small group of five women and three men, they returned to Skyhold.

SUMMARY: A pair was sent to investigate the herd of gurn that have taken over a remote chantry grounds near the Western Approach and do what they can to aid the chanters and deal with the situation

    REPORT:

The pair set out early and with the kind weather were able to make good time to the Chantry.

When they arrived, it was quickly confirmed that gurn had indeed taken over the entirety of the grounds. They were not agitated enough to purposefully harm the clerics residing there, or seek to do increased damage to the structure of the Chantry now that they had settled in, but conversation with the clerics revealed that early attempts to get them to leave had caused some damage. One of their number was injured, but is stable and is being treated with no need for extra aid. The real problem is the gurns.

Having dealt with displaced herds before, Dahlasanor suggested that perhaps the reason for their move was a problem within their natural habitat, and that the two agents should follow the herd's trail back and investigate within the Western Approach to see what had caused the odd migration.

After traveling to the Approach and finding the initial living space of the herd, it was discovered that the space had been corrupted by multiple relatively small deposits of Red Lyrium that had grown from the ground; enough to cause the animals distress and cause them to seek out less tainted pastures. Proper care was taken, and ultimately the deposits were destroyed.

The task of luring or driving the herd back to their initial grounds and how to do so without further destruction to the grounds was a difficult discussion, but eventually the pair decided it might be best done by creating the feeling of a similar discomfort to the initial one that drove them from their home by utilizing magic. The hope is that this might cause them to decide to leave on their own, and that the herd could be further directed along with the continued use of magic as impetus. With some thought, Mage Ceallach was able to accomplish this, and though it was a time consuming process, the herd was safely delivered home.

Due to their desire to well-represent the Inquisition in this matter, and aware that extra willing aid given by a Dalish elf and Mage would most likely bode well for further diplomatic efforts, the pair extended the tenure of their stay in order to help repair the structural damage to the Chantry, re-seed and plant the gardens that had been destroyed, and restore the hives. During this time, Dahlasanor mentioned that Mage Shivana was particularly skilled at the recapture of swarms, and secured approval for him to join them with Ser Ashlock as escort. It will take some time for the gardens to regrow, as such things cannot be hurried, but the reconstruction was successful in good time given both the aid of the Inquisition in general and the happy accident of the Inquisition's Master Builder having been sent.

While successfully completed in this case, the pair would like to suggest that this matter be forwarded to the attention of both Scoutmaster Ashara and Mage Delacroix and Warden Serra with the Red Lyrium project, as there may be some value in being able to scout out further deposits of Red Lyrium before areas become largely overgrown by seeking awareness of other strange animal migratory and nesting patterns.

    Dahlasanor,

You all have my sincere thanks for your thorough efforts on this mission, and mindfulness of the impacts for both those you were assisting and the Inquisition.

I have made sure a copy of your report made its way to the desk of Delacroix of the Red Lyrium project, and Scoutmaster Ashara. I have advised them that if they wish to seek out further information they should contact both yourself and Enchanter Ceallach. With that said, if I can offer you any assistance or support, please do not hesitate to make it known to me.

I am sure the Left Hand will be particularly pleased to receive word that the gurn herd went unharmed.

    Yours sincerely,

    REPORT:

    Dear Knight-Enchanter Amsel,

The Chantry personnel and the artifacts have been delivered intact, save for perhaps their nerves. We were fortunate to be boarded only once by pirates, who I believe gave up quicker than they might have otherwise when they realized what our cargo was. It is valuable, of course, but nothing you can eat or too easily sell. The Sisters and their accompanying Brother asked me to extend to you their sincerest gratitude. I know that it was sincere because they insisted on telling me so despite their seasickness and mild terror.

Marcoulf de Ricart, a recent arrival, conducted himself admirably, and I do not think my opinion of Baroness Dufort-Lacapalette and Monsieur de Foncé has ever been in question. We did nearly lose de Ricart to a squid, and the Baroness to the sea. Monsieur de Foncé was stabbed, but not seriously. He will make a full recovery, I am certain, though the recovery may be hasted by your prayers and well wishes.

Thank you for the opportunity to be of service.

    Dear Brother Jehan,

I thank you for your leadership in this endeavour, and an extremely grateful to all of you for your diligence and fortitude.

I have heard that yourself, the Baroness and Monsieur de Foncé have a strong rapport and history of working very well together, and appreciate your collaboration on this; having those we can rely upon in adverse circumstances means much. If I have need to call on you again for missions involving the protection of cargo, would you be content to work with this same combination of colleagues again?

Additionally, are there further preparations you would wish to be ensured, for better safety? A squid sounds a formidable danger, and if we can avoid loss of life or limb in our undertakings, I will do my utmost to secure the safety of our people on missions.

Thank you once again, and I will be sure to keep Monsieur de Foncé in my prayers.

SUMMARY: An Inquisition team went to Val Royeaux to provide security for a convention concerning the Canticle of Shartan’s reinstatement as a part of the Chant, rather than a Dissonant Verse. While not actively campaigning for the Canticle’s reinstatement, they did assist a Chantry sister whose scholarship may support its inclusion in the canon by retrieving a stolen manuscript for her.

    REPORT:
[The following letter is written in Simon’s hand, having been dictated by Myr.]

    To Knight-Enchanter Amsel,

At the request of Revered Mother Berengaria, we journeyed to Val Royeaux to guard a convention of clerics gathered to debate the Canticle of Shartan. A number of attendees were expected to argue strongly for its reinstatement in the canon in full; consequently, the Revered Mother expected trouble between the various factions present.

At Knight-Lieutenant Coupe’s advisement--and with an eye toward maintaining the late Divine’s legacy and mandate for the Inquisition’s sake--we elected to maintain tight security especially for those Chantry sisters arguing in support of the Canticle’s return as a canon Verse. In addition to breaking up a fistfight that erupted during one of the debates, we assisted one Sister Aleya by retrieving the only copy of her latest manuscript from a thief who had taken it from her rooms. The sister’s work comparing the Dissonant Verses to the accepted canon appears to support claims that the first Justinia was the author of the Canticle of Shartan, and as such provides evidence for arguments to its validity as a historical document.

The question of the Canticle’s canonicity, however, remains unresolved. Strong cases were presented both for and against its re-inclusion in the Chant of Light and further conferences are planned to pursue the matter.

The operation has thus far been a success, with two portraits completed and numerous sketches made so that more can be painted after we return to Kirkwall.

It remains to be seen how the portraits will be received, and their focus was not quite as religious in nature as I would have preferred for the Order's sake, but they are inspiring scenes of secular heroism. It is my hope that Serah Lourdes' representation will improve public perception of elven courage and worthiness as a whole.

SUBJECT: Deliver a Message to Provisional Grand Chancellor Pascal
    PARTICIPANTS: Araceli Bonaventura, Luwenna Coupe
    DATE FILED: Harvestmere
    STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Leliana and Cassandra refused consideration for Divine. Araceli and Coupe traveled to Val Royeaux to deliver the message, and snoop on the other candidates. They did some sneaking to get additional info.

    REPORT:

    Knight-Enchanter,

Sister Leliana and the Lady Seeker have declined consideration as Divine. The Provisional Grand Chancellor expresses regret: Each had acquired broader support than the remaining candidates.

This speaks well to the perception of the Inquisition, and to Justinia’s memory; it is the latter most like to have smoothed proceedings. For all the upheaval of Her Holiness' tenure, the Grand Cathedral wants for leadership. The clergy remain confident as required but the Chantry does not move upon sermons alone, and within the halls doubt is as miasma. Pascal has taken laudable efforts to hold matters together; he is yet too little to quash the danger that uncertainty engenders.

We will not have any commitment of strength from Val Royeaux until this is settled.

  • In light of Kirkwall, I had hoped to find a well-positioned Marcher, but I cannot recommend our support be extended to Grand Cleric Gertruda of Tantervale. Her disparaging views of the Inquisition are well-documented, and we are unlike to shift them alone. We have not gained her consideration through any overture of friendship, but the temperature of the water: She has seen difficulty in pursuing the Sunburst Throne while in open opposition to us. Any tolerance would vanish once seated.

Still, a conservative voice will be favoured within both North and South. Gertruda perhaps requires an active check.

  • I too regret I must caution against Grand Cleric Elise of Ayseleigh. I am familiar with the work of the latter, and have regarded her highly in the past. However, she is greatly advanced in years — some have it that her mind has slipped. It pains me to lend any credence to such rumours, but they have found footing to render her unsuitable. We cannot afford close association.

Ayseleigh will soon need seek a new Grand Cleric; it would behoove us to know those who might succeed her.

  • Grand Cleric Clorentine of Montsimmard is mild, biddable, and plainly bid by more ambitious figures. Getting a straight answer out of her is as drawing water from a stone; an asset — but not to us. She is backed by the wealthy, and I do not know her to be involved in the Game, save that her supporters certainly have been. She presents a gamble that I mislike risking.

  • Revered Mother Benedetta of Rialto appears a literalist devoted to spreading the Chant. I question which version. Those who speak of her speak exceedingly well of her, but she is young, and lacks many connections. Her youth and popularity trouble me when taken alongside her theology. An Exalted March is one way to unify — it might even be turned against Corypheus. I wonder that it would end with Corypheus.

I will be researching her views in greater detail; I suggest you do the same.

  • Grand Cleric Agathe of Cumberland is no one’s first choice. It is for this reason I find her most agreeable as ours. She seeks progress — for the elves, for the Circles — but she has been careful of it. She will not pull down towers, but neither would she see matters continue as they have. This outpost exists within a bubble; a sphere of isolation and wealth that shields us from the danger of the world outside, and from recognition of the danger that we pose within it. With every war that is fought, it is not we that are forgotten. With every tax that must be levied, it is not our children who starve. To protect others is a balancing act: I believe her most equipped to advance change without harming those weakest.

A caution: Agathe is not reported charming. 'Effective' is damning praise; she remains effective the same. A Nevarran might do something to settle matters in the South, but it would not go down effortlessly in the capitol. If she is to be supported, we must examine the means by which she reached her current rank. Encouraging these gifts seems likelier (and more beneficial) than teaching her the value of courteous responses to incompetence.

Sra. Bonaventura and myself are available to discuss these matters in greater detail, as required.

    Regards,

    — Ser Coupe

    STATUS: Complete (threading ongoing)
SUMMARY: Mother Hortense of the Mont-de-Marc Chantry appealed to the Inquisition for help in escorting the many refugees gathered there to safety. A party of Inquisition scouts attended, but it went extremely poorly.

    REPORT:
    To the Chantry Relations office,

We made it safely to Mont-de-Marc, but faced delays in our travel with evading Ander scouts. The delays had some pretty catastrophic consequences, in that by the time we got there a good number of the refugees had already left. Mother Hortense said that they were convinced no one was coming of them. I’m really sorry we couldn’t get there sooner, or what I’m about to report might not have happened.

We tried to pull those that were rushing towards the others back, and it went real bad. By trying to go after them, it drew more attention our way.
( There’s a few false starts at sentences, and things scribbled out. )

I don’t think I can hack going into the details of it, every time I try to string combinations of words together to describe it on paper it doesn’t do it justice. If you want to talk about it to get more details, I’ll do my best.

A lot of people are dead. I’d say of the people we set out with, about half of them died in that fight. Those that had already left the Chantry before were already dead or near it. Mother Hortense has and almost all the children that were left in the Chantry have made it safely.
I’m very sorry to report that Ornol, Fivraena Torrald, and Knight-Lieutenant Clemence Barbary who joined us from Skyhold did not make back with us. Clemence ordered all of us to leave, and the three of them held formation at a bottleneck to hold back the darkspawn and give us time to escape with what survivors we could. There’s no way we’d have been able to make it out of there without their sacrifice.

I’m like to ask that maybe in the future there be training on procedures for us to follow, and what we should do in some scenarios, but I honestly have no idea if that is something that can be done. There’s too many variables to be able to account for everything. This was just a really rough day.

Like I said, ask me whatever you need to. Mother Hortense might need some time before she’s able to speak about it, but Galatea and Simon can give you details as well.

Written by Alexandra Karahalios at request of Galatea.

PS. If Mother Hortense or one of the others mentions a big bear, don’t be weirded out. I think it’s that one Val, Newt, Cosima and I helped out. He helped a lot.

    Doctor Karahalios,

While it grieves me to hear of the losses suffered in the evacuation, I thank the Maker that you saw the survivors through to safety. I will send word to Skyhold concerning messeres Ornol and Torrald, and Ser Barbary.

Our Grey Wardens have substantial experience in fighting darkspawn and may offer some insight into diverting them away from vulnerable civilians in such cases as this. I will put the question to them. Doing so properly may require more detail from all of you on what happened--but those discussions can wait until you've had time and space to recover from your ordeal.

If there is anything I or this office might do to aid that recovery at this time, it is yours. The Chantry looks after her own.
