RED LYRIUM
PersonnelReportsArchivesInbox
In addition to being dangerous to civilians, red lyrium allows Corypheus to control or influence those it infects and to augment the abilities of his forces. Red lyrium is currently being cultivated in the Sunless Lands and has been sighted growing in darkspawn in the Anderfels. The Inquisition needs to stop its spread and prevent Corypheus from continuing to use it as a weapon.

  • A theory on red lyrium's effects on the body that the mods said I could use (cw: body horror)
"I imagine the major internal organs are the first to go - the Lyrium takes them over, bolstering the metabolism of the host and making their body more resilient to the changes that are about to occur. The circulatory and lymphatic systems are assimilated very quickly because they’re used extensively by the Red Lyrium as transport systems. The brain, too, eventually succumbs at some point, perhaps later depending on the willpower of the host, maybe in a fashion similar to how Ophiocordyceps unilateralis is able to take over the minds of ants and pilot them to propagate itself. The Red Lyrium then proceeds to cannibalize other parts of the body, replacing some of the skeleton to make room for the expanding crystals and substituting its own firm composition to maintain structural integrity and function. It uses the life essence of these cannibalized body parts to continue nourishing its growing crystals. Eventually, a threshold is reached wherein there is no spare tissue left to convert - and that’s when the Red Lyrium cannibalizes the parts of the body it was piggybacking on and crystallizes, becoming immobile and statue-like."

SKILLS & EXPERTISE: Kain's primary role will be in the fighting side of things rather than research, whether it's going after red templars and affiliated types, or destroying red lyrium. He can also take on guard duties when out in the field. He's got a personal interest in fighting this stuff, so he'll be all for learning how to best combat it from a fighter perspective.

This isn't a formal report, but if you have not spent significant time ashore, I thought you ought be aware that there are merchants in Llomerryn selling red lyrium. I inquired as to their origins, but the trails were tangled and ultimately lead nowhere. I can pass on what I was able to purchase in order to keep it out of the hands of the populace, but admittedly there seems little else that can be done, at this point.

    Oh, no.

    [ She's audibly groaning now. ]

Thank you, Inessa. You'll be recompensated from the project budget. Have you put runes on the container to stop its influence affecting you?

    [personal profile] circleprodigy 2017-10-03 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, immediately. I would have destroyed the red lyrium, but we might as well compare to that found in the south beforehand.

Good, good. Or I should say 'as much good as can be found in this situation.'

[ She lets out not a groan this time, but a sigh as she rubs her temples. ]

Did it cost a great deal? As in something meant as a fancy of the upper class? Or was it meant as a curiosity to anyone?
    circleprodigy: (facepalm)

    [personal profile] circleprodigy 2017-10-03 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
The red lyrium seemed to be a curiosity that anyone could purchase; there was no attempt to keep it from anyone with the coin to pay. It didn't take all my coin to acquire, but they could sense my interest and that did not make negotiation easy.

    [Echoing the sigh now.]

I almost wish it were exclusive, then perhaps the danger of it spreading would be lessened.

Then this is not simply a matter of finding a supplier of this to the nobles and wealthy. Anyone could be mining this, or at least acquiring it. And this raises more questions. One would think the Red Templars would keep a tight hold on their sowing grounds. Unless... dwarves? Dwarves would be skilled at mining this on their own, without needing a contract from the Red Templars.

    A request

    Madame Christine,

If it is possible, may I have your permission to, after you have seen to these men's personal possessions containing red lyrium, have them shipped to my office? I will need to have them sent onto their families when they finally succumb to the poison.

Also, as these are templars outside of my personal purview, would you please ask any sane enough if they would like a message sent home.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

    Knight-Commander,

The personal effects will be cleansed with runes and then delivered to your office via my runners. It may take several days to ensure that all presence of red lyrium is gone. Should there be any delay past a few days, I shall message you to let you know.

I will be interviewing those among them who are still capable of speaking rationally, and will certainly take down personal messages for them as well. This will also take several days, so that I may compile the messages into one grouping for you.

Please let me know if you require more from me regarding these Templars, or if you wish to see/speak with them yourself. Arrangements could be made.

    Respectfully,

    Knight-Enchanter Christine Delacroix

    SUBJECT: Red Lyrium Found
PARTICIPANTS: James Norrington, Christine Delacroix, Inessa Serra, Kain Ventfort, Beleth Ashara, Geneviève Lucienne De La Fontaine
    DATE FILED: 30th of Harvestmere
    STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: In short; the discovery of red lyrium on the island. Brief description of the area, and what actions were taken.

    REPORT:

    To the Red Lyrium Team:

You have undoubtedly read the reports of how we became trapped on the island itself, the creatures and their vicinity to the Rift, and our means of both attacking and destroying these creatures. I myself, after my duties had been met to ensure we were safe and secure on the shore, took my mabari and tracked the red lyrium along the shore until I came across the source.

The source was in fact a half-sunken ship, on the edge of a fjord jutting into the water itself. The ship was encrusted with red lyrium, going down into the water itself, in the largest amounts I had seen thus far. I returned to camp and returned with other members of the Red Lyrium team, as well as experience climbers - namely Ashara, Delacroix, Serra, Ventfort, and de la Fontaine.

We traveled down the side of the cliff, and then up on the ship itself. We found then that the ship was rather unsteady, due to the weight of the red lyrium itself. We carefully investigated the cargo area, which was partially submerged in water, and completely covered in red lyrium spikes.

We followed that trail to the captain's cabin, finding several bodies along the way. In the cabin, we found the body of the captain - a knife still in his back from what we could only assume was a bloody mutiny. Through our search, we discovered the captain's logbook, of which I have included with this report, showing that the shipment itself was bound to Antiva City, but the ship had been blown off course.

We then proceeded to destroy the red lyrium as thoroughly as possible, to save the lives of the remaining sea creatures. No samples were taken, considering the potency of the red lyrium itself.

I can only conclude that this is part of the red lyrium shipping ring - and if it is going as far as Antiva City, then it is not much farther until it reaches the Qunari, whom from my meetings with them have made it clear that they find this to be a dangerous material. Since we do not want them marching down here to 'conquer us for our own good', I would highly advise stepping up our search to shut down the red lyrium trade and find their source of it.

Please, feel free to visit me in my office with any other questions you may have. A copy of this has been sent to the head of Seafaring Affairs, Madame Araceli.

    With regards,
    Ser James Norrington
Knight Commander of the Inquistion's Templar Order

[ A letter sent to the Red Lyrium office. ]

    Christine Delacroix,

Enclosed is a copy of a report sent to me from a scouting team surveying the Hunterhorn Mountains. They discovered darkspawn corpses with trace amounts of red lyrium--a worrying revelation. I'll be sending more scouts to see if they can find any more evidence of infected darkspawn. In the meantime, if you have any questions that the report can't answer, I suggest that you speak to the man who wrote it, as he was in charge of the mission.

    -Scoutmaster Beleth Ashara
