PROJECT

RED LYRIUM
PersonnelReportsArchivesInbox
In addition to being dangerous to civilians, red lyrium allows Corypheus to control or influence those it infects and to augment the abilities of his forces. Red lyrium is currently being cultivated in the Sunless Lands and has been sighted growing in darkspawn in the Anderfels. The Inquisition needs to stop its spread and prevent Corypheus from continuing to use it as a weapon.

ASSIGNMENT: THE LADY'S NEW NECKLACE
WHAT: Ever since the Inquisition's stop in Llomerryn revealed that pieces of red lyrium were being sold by merchants, it's been a project of several scouts to track them down. It's now been confirmed that Lady Babette Fontaine of Val Foret, Orlais is in possession of a piece that she's had made into a necklace. It's imperative that the Inquisition confiscate and destroy this necklace before it causes serious harm to the Lady or those around her.
WHERE: Orlais
WHEN: Cloudreach
WHO: 1-2 Red Lyrium Project members, each able to take a non-project member if they choose, as long as the person is briefed on the dangers of handling red lyrium.

ASSIGNMENT: TEST CLEANSING RUNES ON THE BLIGHT
WHAT: With new developments happening concerning red lyrium infected darkspawn, Knight-Enchanter Delacroix would like several Wardens to take weapons with cleansing runes and see how the Blight reacts to it.
WHERE: Western Approach (the dark, Blighted area near the Abyssmal Rift)
WHEN: Cloudreach
WHO: 1-2 Wardens who are part of the Red Lyrium Project, each able to take a non-project member if they choose, as long as they're also a Warden, or the Wardens trust these people will not be infected by the Blight.

ASSIGNMENT: DESTROY ABANDONED RED LYRIUM OPERATION
WHAT: With Red Templars moving to the Anderfels, it's left several red lyrium operations abandoned and in need of destruction. The first to be found by Inquisition scouts is a small cave in Ferelden. Several large red lyrium crystals need to be destroyed, and a search done to see if the Red Templars left anything of interest behind before their flight.
WHERE: Ferelden (halfway between the Storm Coast and Crestwood)
WHEN: Cloudreach
WHO: 1-2 Red Lyrium Project members, each able to take a non-project member if they choose, as long as the person is briefed on the dangers of handling red lyrium.

SUMMARY: Description of the assignment: "With new developments happening concerning red lyrium infected darkspawn, Knight-Enchanter Delacroix would like several Wardens to take weapons with cleansing runes and see how the Blight reacts to it."

REPORT:

Knight-Enchanter Delacroix,

Our investigation into the effects of cleansing runes on Blighted rocks has proven successful. We applied the runes to several blighted areas within the Western Approach. In these tests, we saw the taint either minimize noticeably, or... simply move away from the area where the rune was applied, only to concentrate and blacken another area further away. Attached, you'll find our notes with measurements and other observations on the specific ways in which the runes affected the taint's presence.

Although it doesn't appear to be a means to fully destroy the Blight, these findings are undoubtedly still very promising. Might it be a step toward finding a true cure? It's hard to say at this point, but the reaction we saw cannot be dismissed. I'll also note for the record that we had some darkspawn interrupt us, but we didn't notice anything unusual from that particular battle. I still cannot help but think that more might be uncovered, given the right experimental conditions. Perhaps all of this is for our researchers to consider further.

Sincerely,

Warden Kain Ventfort

REPORT:

Knight-Enchanter Delacroix,

It is done. We (Kain, Carver and I) reached the site and destroyed all red lyrium found, with the cleansing runes given. Said runes were very effective, cutting down our time considerably. None of the spikes remain.

We also thoroughly investigated the area, though recovered nothing of real importance. There was a letter written by a Red Templar, but it holds no vital details or I would include it. The fate of that letter is still being decided, but probably sent to the family to which it's addressed. I hold no pity for the Red Templars, but their family is innocent and deserves to know their fate.

Regards,
Inessa Serra

REPORT:

Knight-Enchanter Delacroix,

The investigation has borne fruit, unfortunately. The circus bear known as Boo-Boo was indeed infected with red lyrium; the red eyes, the two-toned voice...I've witnessed it all before. It's a miracle the poor creature hadn't already gone completely mad and rampaged through the circus. Our timing at least spared that from happening, though there was still a cost. His handler listened to reason, but before the bear could be put down (we were prepared to do it, as the handler was far too emotional), it lost all restraint and attacked. There was nothing we could do to save the handler's life. Fortunately, our encounter happened after-hours, so children did not witness the death of a beloved circus animal. (And I would like to commend all members of my party with showing restraint during the act; keeping the bears' attention away from children while not being mauled is no easy feat.)

However, Boo-Boo still exists, in a fashion. The assistant handler -now promoted, I imagine- not wanting to deprive the circus, insisted on a replacement. The new 'Boo-Boo' is thankfully a fraud; it's red lyrium 'spikes' are nothing more than paper mache glued to his fur and painted red. So any further mentions of the animal come from an attempt to keep the memory of its predecessor alive, not true red lyrium infection.

Regards,

Warden Inessa Serra

Delacroix,

My apologies for the brevity of this note. I wanted to ensure a copy of this report came to you as quickly as possible.

Enchanter Ceallach and Nahariel of Dahlasanor recently returned from a mission near the Western Approach for Chantry Relations, and their report made mention of red lyrium that had disturbed a local herd of gurn. Although these deposits were small, they feel that some additional scouting to the area would be beneficial to ensure there is no greater underlying issue.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist further. I am sure the individuals who attended the mission would be more than willing to grant you further insight. I am also forwarding this report to Scoutmaster Ashara, in case she wishes to see scouting done in the area.

Yours sincerely,

Herian Amsel

MISSION: THE CULT OF THE RED GLOWING THING
WHAT: On the outskirts of the Fallow Mire is a group of cultists who are worshipping a rather large chunk of red lyrium they discovered hidden in the area long after the Inquisition left it. They've gotten away with it for so long because it's a remote area after the mire was abandoned due to corpses. The Inquisition must send a group to kill these cultists and destroy the red lyrium.

WHEN: August; report due by the end of August 31st
WHO: Open to everyone, whether a red lyrium project member or not. Since there will be a battle against at least 10 cultists, think on how many extra fighters you'll need.

Congratulations! You've been assigned to the mission: The Cult of the Red Glowing Thing! As leader of the mission, it will be your job to submit a report as Aro here once you feel you have enough plotted out and RPed. Usually I'd ask that this be submitted by the end of the month, but due to this month's mod plot, if you need an extension, let me know and I can push back the due date into September.

As a reminder, missions require some part of them be RPed out. Whether you want to run it as a lead up to the cult, fighting the cult, and/or the aftermath is up to you. It could be any part/all parts of it you'd like including stuff I haven't even thought of. You can contact a few friends to RP it with you or open it up to the whole game by posting a sign up on the OOC comm. You can also run it whenever you'd like before the due date, but again, this mod plot might be a reason you'd wish to delay it a little. I'm flexible about it. As long as something gets RPed out and a report is submitted before September's over, it's fine by me.

Things I'd like Aro and co. to focus on (whether it's RPed out or said to have been done if you RP the aftermath of the mission) are:
1. Destroying the red lyrium. I take a vague, video game inspiration for this. Basically a character hits it and it explodes. They can have cleansing runes on their weapons for added effect (though just for the mission, as cleansing runes are an AC reward item). I tend not to think too hard on the details because video games are weird.
2. Killing the infected cultists. All will be too far gone to continue living without constantly endangering others. According to the Dragon Age Wiki: "the red lyrium they ingest slowly eats away at their bodies and destroys their minds until he or she later dies in agony." I'm leaving it vague as to whether the cultists were shaving bits off to eat as part of their worship, or if long term exposure to the presence of the red lyrium still infected them.
3. Burning the bodies. Because burying the corpses with red lyrium is a no go. Not only do corpses rise, but the red lyrium could sow itself into the soil.
These are all things the Red Lyrium Project Leader (Christine) would tell Aro needed to be done to insure the red lyrium doesn't spread or harm anyone else. At this point, we can handwave she gave him the Red Lyrium 101 lesson and he knows the dangers in being around it/handling it. If anything isn't clear, or you have other questions, you can reply to me here, send me a PM to this account, or contact me on plurk at [plurk.com profile] megoom. Have fun!

Hi there!

We have a group of 6 characters who will take this on, including Aro. General consensus is that due to how busy this month has been, we would prefer to log this in September instead. Would that be okay?

Yes, that's perfectly fine! If you could have an idea of the log's results before Sept. 30th so you can submit the report by then, I'd prefer that, but you can of course keep threading it as long as you'd like.

SUMMARY: Arohaerd led a group to Fallow Mire to deal with a group of cultists worshipping a chunk of Red Lyrium.

REPORT:

Project Leader,

Per your request, I took a team to investigate what was happening at Fallow Mire. Teren, Isaac, Connor, Anders and Merrill came with me, and I would commend all of them for their bravery. Unfortunately the reports we'd received were not unfounded. We came upon thirteen clerics in total, all touched by Red Lyrium. There was no choice but to kill them, and the fight was bloody. Thankfully, my team was able for the task. We had a useful combination of mages and hardened warriors, and though the enemy was fierce, they were overrun.

Afterwards, the bodies were burned, and should be able to infect no other. I can also confirm that a large and dangerous piece of Red Lyrium was present - they had evidently been worshipping it, and indeed some were beside it when we arrived. It was destroyed in its entirety during the course of our fight, and no piece was left behind.

It is my sincere hope that we have heard the last of this matter. I should like to formally record my thanks to those who accompanied me.

Regards,

Arohaerd.

Bartrand's Folly

[personal profile] circleprodigy 2018-10-31 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
SUBJECT: Bartrand's Folly
PARTICIPANTS: Inessa, Merrill, Six, Jester, Kain, Dolores and Anders
DATE FILED: Late Harvestmere
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: A team is sent to the first known sighting of red lyrium; the ancient thaig now known as Bartrand's Folly. Their task is to destroy the source or protect it from exploitation, denying the Red Templars means to continue their operations.

REPORT:

Our team reached Bartrand's Folly after some resistance; darkspawn weren't an issue, but the rock wraiths soon found us. It's thanks to the skill of all involved that we were able to counter them so quickly, though I do not believe we defeated all in the area. At any rate, I digress. We came to inspect the red lyrium situation.

Upon reaching the site, we soon found evidence of smugglers; lanterns, carts and such placed throughout. While an initial thought was to collapse the tunnels and thus deny the Red Templars their prize, an argument was made regarding denying the dwarves their history should we seal off the area. Then, too, was the valid concern off bringing the entire area down upon us. I am a Grey Warden, as were some of my colleagues; the idea of sacrifice is not new to us, but the rest did not make that same oath. Additionally, this was not the only source of red lyrium in the world and so that rendered such a sacrifice meaningless.

In the end, we came to a decision that seemed to satisfy everyone...at least, for the time being. We (the mages and the physically stronger of the group) were to seal away the area without collapsing said tunnels, save for one to be guarded by Inquisition agents. A missive was also sent to Orzammar, to alert the Shaperate to its presence and current state. What they do with the information is entirely in their hands now.

Inessa Serra
