PROJECT: Hostile Powers

PROJECT

HOSTILE POWERS
PersonnelReportsArchivesInboxAssignments
The Warden coup in the Anderfels and Corypheus’ open occupation of Tevinter’s capital have left both nations openly opposed to the Inquisition and its efforts to restore order. The Hostile Powers project (previously a more broadly focused Northern Powers) is focused on identifying and exploiting opportunities to disrupt Corypheus’ control over those countries.

SUBJECT: Te Vene or Not Te Vene
PARTICIPANTS: Benedict & a bunch of randos
DATE FILED: July-ish
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Benedict tried to educate the unwashed masses on Tevinter culture and was moderately successful. Some people are still very unreasonable about it but that will be a longer-term project.

REPORT:
Averesch,

The attempt didn't go as badly as I might have imagined. There are those who actually, genuinely, seem to want to know more about the Imperium, and I am happy to keep answering their questions as long as they ask them. There are also those who showed no interest, or the interest they showed was in bad faith. Perhaps further efforts are needed to enlighten them.

My invitation to dine still stands, by the way.

Benedict Artemaeus

11 9:44 - Supply Chain Disaster

SUBJECT:
PARTICIPANTS: Nell Voss, Clarke Griffin, Gareth (the Archivist)
DATE FILED: Firstfall 10
STATUS: Complete
SUMMARY: Team sent to discreetly block some merchant traffic between Tevinter and Antiva by obstructing a key pass in the Hundred Pillars gets caught red-handed.

REPORT:

Kostos,

As you know, this mission was a disaster. We reached the pass without incident and scouted the location thoroughly before deciding our best option was to use magic to create a rockslide that would block travel through the pass. This would be difficult and time-consuming to clear, and would appear to be natural. Removal attempts might even cause future slides that would continue to block the pass. Rifter Clarke Griffin helped choose the optimal location to fully block the pass with minimal evidence of human intervention.

The plan was sound, but unfortunately the stone proved more stubborn than anticipated, and it was necessary for Gareth to lend his magical strength to the effort. Without him scouting the western approach, we were surprised by a party of travelers who arrived just in time to see us throw several boulders into the road. They party proved to be large, Antivan, and well-armed, and we chose to retreat rather than engage and risk damaging relations further by engaging.

At a certain point it became clear that were likely to be caught, and in order to prevent Clarke and Gareth and their anchors from being taken prisoner, I remained behind to create a distraction and cover their escape. Both returned to Kirkwall safely, while I was captured and transported to Seleny. Although I claimed no association with the Inquisition, they had already recognized insignia on our tack and I was not believed. Marisol Vivas later secured my release using her personal funds and influence, but they appeared to remain extremely suspicious of Inquisition involvement. Hopefully our later appearance at the Iansoli wedding went some way to repairing relations.

11 9:44 - The Black Divine

SUMMARY: A team traveled to several cities in Tevinter to speak with local clerics and gather information regarding the Black Divine's political affiliations. They were partially successful.

REPORT:
Project Leader Averesch,

I selected this team from those available I felt were best-qualified to infiltrate various spheres of Tevinter society without detection, most likely to keep their heads under pressure, and most capable of defending themselves and managing an escape alone if necessary. All three acquitted themselves well and demonstrated their fitness for this type of work in future.

We traveled first through Antiva to Marothius, and approached the Grand Cleric as concerned Antivan merchants. He claimed to have known Nahalias well as a boy, and relayed several anecdotes about his youth that I have recorded separately and attached to this report. In his opinion, Nahalias is unlikely to support Corypheus because he is too intelligent to believe that Corypheus could achieve the restoration of Tevinter that he promises. However, the Grand Cleric admitted that he has not spoken directly to Nahalias in years and did not know his mind. His information is thus suspect, but he did seem truthful. He is a very old man and told us he was too near to death to fear assassination for speaking frankly.

We might have been able to gain further information, but a party of well-dressed men arrived in the chantry and appeared too interested in our presence. We took the usual precautions in departing from the city and I do not believe we were followed.

In Perivantium the Grand Cleric was not present and his immediate inferiors were not open to conversation on first approach. They appeared to fear surveillance of some kind, but we saw no sign that they were being monitored. The Cleric's secretary hinted that information related to our queries could be found in the office. Our scouting revealed that the chantry building was occupied and well-lit at all hours, so a ruse was executed to gain entry. Vivas and Elris distracted the brothers on duty while Rivain and I gained access to the office and collected the enclosed encoded correspondence between the Grand Cleric and Nahalias. I recognized the code as one cracked by other members of this project several weeks ago and have enclosed rough deciphered versions.

We saw no sign of pursuit in Perivantium or on our way to Carastes. On reaching that city, we again approached the local clergy and were received by the Grand Cleric, who is known to be close to the Black Divine. Our pre-approach reconnaissance was deficient, and we were immediately imprisoned in the chantry by the Grand Cleric and his brothers, who appeared to have been prepared for our arrival. They intended to hold us until a team arrived to transport us to Minrathous. We effected an escape, and were pursued by the chantry guard, the city guard, and the awaited reinforcements, who we believe were the same men observing us in Marothius. We succeeded in evading re-capture without significant casualties and were able to rendezvous with our transportation back to Kirkwall on schedule.
